COMMENTS ON THE OBJECT:

IC 1318, also called the Butterfly Nebula, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus.

It is a huge, fairly bright and distinct nebula in emission, shaped like a circumflex accent, which is quite difficult to see, but which appears easily in photographs. It has a dark nebula at its centre. It spreads out around the bright star Sadr (γ Cygni). It is located in the Milky Way, so it has a rich background of stars.
