COMMENTS ON THE OBJECT:

M51, also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy, is a relatively nearby spiral galaxy located approximately 23.6 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici.

However, the designation M51 includes two distinct galaxies: the main galaxy (NGC 5194) and its satellite galaxy (NGC 5195), which is connected to the main galaxy by a “bridge” of matter, the result of gravitational interactions between the two objects.

M51 is modest in size compared to our Milky Way: 60,000 light-years in diameter, or barely 60% of our galaxy.
