COMMENTS ON THE PHOTO:

NGC 4945 lies just 13 million light-years away in the constellation Centauri. Although NGC 4945 is seen from the edge, observations suggest that this star-filled galaxy is a spiral galaxy similar to our own, with luminous spiral arms and a central bar. Beyond these similarities, the centre of NGC 4945 is much brighter and is almost certainly home to a super-massive black hole that is devouring huge quantities of matter and ejecting energy into space.

Observations have shown that NGC 4945 has an active nucleus, which means that its central bulge emits much more energy than quieter galaxies such as the Milky Way. Scientists classify NGC 4945 as a Seyfert galaxy, named after the American astronomer Carl K. Seyfert, who in 1943 described the particular signatures of the nuclei of certain galaxies.

NGC 4945 is located just 17 arcminutes east of the star Xi Centauri.
