COMMENTS ON THE PHOTO:

The active galaxy NGC 5128, in the constellation Centaurus. This galaxy coincides with an intense and extensive radio source known as Centaurus A. Located between 10 and 13 million light-years away, it is the closest known active galaxy. It has a remarkable feature: a dark band of dust running through its centre, apparently the result of the collision of an elliptical galaxy with a spiral galaxy several hundred million years ago. This merger triggered intense star formation and violent phenomena, such as jets of matter ejected at high speed by a supermassive black hole, whose mass is around 100 million times that of the Sun.
