COMMENTS ON THE PHOTO:

Ngc 6820 (also known as Sh2-86) is an emission nebula associated with the open star cluster Ngc 6823 in the constellation Little Fox. The most striking feature of the nebula NGC 6820 is the column (or pillar) that points towards the open cluster NGC 6823.

NGC 6823 is about 50 light-years across and lies about 6,000 light-years from Earth. It slowly transforms nearby gas clouds into stars. The centre of the cluster formed around two million years ago and is dominated by a host of bright young blue stars. The outer parts of the cluster contain even younger stars. The elongated shape of the huge pillars of gas and dust is probably due to erosion caused by the hot radiation emitted by the cluster’s brightest stars. Dark ‘de Bok’ globules of gas and dust are also visible, where new stars are born.
